Ilha Grande

Ilha Grande is a large and beautiful island off the coast of Angra dos Reis and Paraty.

Cars are not allowed on the island, and the access is by boat from either Angra dos Reis or Mangaratiba.

Large parts of the island are protected natural reserves of different types; which imposes heavy limitations to development and investment on the island. It is largely covered with native "Mata Atlântica" forest.

Most beaches on the south side of the island (Lopes Mendes, Sto. Antônio, Caxadaço, Dois Rios, Praia de Leste, Praia de Sul & Aventureiro) fall within these strongly protected areas; while the north side falls largely in "controlled occupation" area.
